Two Reasons Why You Should Make Optometry Visits A Priority

by Hector Holland

If you're like many people, you may think that there is no reason to go see the optometrist as long as your vision is fine. However, this belief may be mistaken, since making consistent optometry visits should be an important part of your overall plan for maintaining good health.  While you're setting up your annual physical, and making plans to see the dentist, use this information to learn more about why you need to make optometry visits a priority as well.

Optometrists Can Detect Other Health Problems

One of the most compelling reasons why it is so important for you to see the optometrist is because there are a number of health problems that can be detected simply by having a trained professional examine your eyes.  This could prove to be lifesaving, since curing some diseases depends so heavily upon early detection.

Although discolored whites of the eyes have long been associated with liver problems, there are some other, more obscure medical issues that can also be detected through the eyes.  Everything from high blood pressure to certain types of cancers can all show up there.

This is why it's so important to go see your optometrist at least every other year if you are a healthy adult between the ages of 18 and 60.  If you are older than 60, or if you have some kind of chronic eye disorder, you will want to go see the eye doctor at least once per year.  Doing so will not only help you maintain your eye health, it can also be a technique you use to pick up on health disorders that your primary care physician may have missed.

Visiting The Optometrist Keeps You From Self-Medicating

Another reason why it is so vital for you to see the eye doctor is because it can keep you from self-medicating.  For example, if you notice that your eyes are starting to become red and itchy, or if you see floaters at night, it can be very tempting to go to a nearby drug store and purchase a bottle of over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops.  However, choosing to self-medicate in this manner could be dangerous, since you run the risk of having a dangerous allergic reaction.

Your eyes are fragile and need the evaluation of a qualified professional.  Instead of taking matters into your own hands, go see a trained optometrist so you can enjoy these benefits and more.
