Addressing the Common, Tiny Challenges Associated with Lip Filler Injections

by Hector Holland

For many people with thin or flat lips, lip filler injections are life-changing. The results last for months, and it only takes a few minutes to receive such an injection at the dermatologist's office. However, lip filler injections can, and often do, come along with a few small challenges. Here are some ways to address those challenges, making lip filler injections even better and more beneficial.

Challenge: The results are too dramatic.

While some people want filler injections that make their lips look incredibly plump, most people would prefer a more subtle look. So, the fear of your injections making your lips look too plump may make you a bit hesitant as you head into your first lip filler appointment. The best way to address this challenge is to be clear with your dermatologist or practitioner about the look you want. Use phrases like "I want my lips just a little fuller" or "I want a natural look" to convey the sort of results you're after. Your practitioner will then know to use fewer injections and a smaller volume of filler.

Challenge: Your lip will look red and sore afterward.

Not everyone experiences sore, red lips after filler injections, but this is a very common side effect. It goes away on its own within a few days, at most. But in the meantime, a good way of dealing with it is to gently hold some ice against your lips to reduce the swelling. To cover the redness, you can apply some concealer to your lips and the skin around them. Apply lipstick over the concealer, and nobody will notice the underlying redness anymore.

Challenge: The injections hurt.

While some people find the pinching sensation of lip filler injections completely tolerable, others are put off by the sensation. It really depends on how sensitive the nerve endings in your lips happen to be. If you know you have sensitive lips or a low pain tolerance, mention this to your practitioner before the injections. They can apply a numbing gel to your lips which will blunt the sensations associated with the injections, making for a far more comfortable experience. Some doctors even give more intense, numbing injections, similar to those used by dentists, prior to filler injections.

Lip filler injections can be really life-changing. Thankfully, the small challenges associated with these treatments are easier to address than you might have thought, too.
